EU Presidency holder Spain becomes first EU state to ratify key ILO Maritime Labour Convention

Spain, which currently holds the European Union Presidency, has become the first EU member state to ratify the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, in a major step toward bringing into force a new, comprehensive “bill of rights” for seafarers.

Debate on the social consequences of the financial and economic crisis

During the session of the Commission for Social Development devoted to policy responses in relation to employment, the Secretary General for Social Policy and Consumer Affairs, Francisco Moza, said on behalf of the European Union that "the impact of economic crisis on the employment and social situation has different manifestations in different countries, but we can learn much from each other on how to address the social consequences and effects of the crisis on employment, taking into account also the gender and different age groups”.

The 2010 Global Model United Nations Conference, to be held in Malaysia this July, would reinforce the Organization’s efforts to build bridges between cultures, officials of the world body, the Permanent Mission of Malaysia and the Commonwealth Secretariat announced today. “It is crucial to engage young people in the issues of the day, including the subject of tolerance, respect and the need for dialogue,” Kiyo Akasaka, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, said at a Headquarters press conference.

The European Union is determined to cooperate in the advancement of social development.

On behalf of the European Union, the Permanent Representative of Spain, Juan Antonio Yáñez-Barnuevo, has called on the Secretary-General to urgently advance the process of appointing the new Under-Secretary-General of the composite entity so that s/he will be in a position to lead the organisation through the changes required to have a strong UN entity focused on advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women.

In the high-level roundtable on Social Integration, the Secretary General for Social Policy, Francisco Moza, said on behalf of the European Union, that “the EU 2020 Strategy will be essential to overcome the crisis successfully. With this strategy we expect to recognize more explicitly the strong interdependence within the EU. No Member State is strong enough to undertake this transformation on its own”.

The European Union calls for better social protection during the global economic crisis

In the high-level roundtable in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the World Summit for Social Development, the Minister for Health and Social Policy, Trinidad Jimenez, said on behalf of the European Union, that “when the global economy is hit by major shocks, the poorest -men, women and children- need to be protected from the consequences whether these are fluctuations in income, high food and oil prices or the emerging effects of climate change. Social protection, and more generally, protection of progress achieved in the MDGs in the face of risk and uncertainty should be on every country’s agenda”.

At the opening of the 48th Commission for Social Development, dedicated to "social integration", the Minister of Health and Social Policy, Trinidad Jimenez, stressed, on behalf of the European Union, that “national experiences from past crises show that in some cases short-term responses to high unemployment rates not only resulted in the exclusion of individuals from the labour market, but also had long-term negative effects on society as a whole”.

Spain wants to progress the incorporation of human rights and fundamental freedoms into Community law

Spain wishes to “make as much progress as possible” to ensure the EU becomes party to the Council of Europe's Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms soon, according to the Spanish Minister for Justice, Francisco Caamaño, at today's opening of a seminar on the challenges and possibilities arising from the Treaty of Lisbon coming into force.

General Assembly Resolution on earthquake in Haiti

On behalf of the EU, the Ambassador Representative of Spain to the United Nations has declared to the General Assembly that "The EU and its Member States have responded rapidly by providing humanitarian emergency assistance and deploying humanitarian and civil protection experts. The first priority has been to dispatch urban search and rescue teams, including military and civil engineering capabilities, the current focus being to provide emergency health, water, food, sanitation, medical facilities, shelter, logistics and telecommunications, among other pressing needs, to the people of Haiti".
